The Youth Service Bureau is an integral organization in our community. They provide a plethora of services that are geared toward keeping children in our community safe and families in our community connected. Centre County has been strengthened a great deal by having such an organization available to our youth and families.

I am a former Board Member but continue to serve on various committees doing what I can to assist YSB in continuing to serve the community. I am proud of the YSB team and feel fortunate to be a part of it all.

Big Brothers Big Sisters held our annual Spring Egg Hunt at Tudek Park in April. It was a sunny and windy afternoon full of egg hunting, spring crafts, and prizes! Of course, there was loads of candy and other yummy snacks, like donuts provided by Dunkin.

A total of 39 people attended with 20 children participating in the egg hunt. Our BBBS team hid 400 eggs! After the egg hunt, there was flowerpot painting and seed planting along with a bumblebee craft. All ages had a wonderful time, and many shared this was the best egg hunt yet!

Special thanks to for sponsoring this year’s BBBS Egg Hunt.

Big Brothers Big Sisters also held our 3rd annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner at Foxdale Village in April. It was a lovely evening that brought together community-based and site-based Bigs, members of our Advisory Council, and our BBBS team. The dinner was delicious and the space so bright and inviting. BBBS is grateful to our volunteers for their commitment to their Littles and our program.

Special thanks to and for sponsoring this beloved event.

Keriann Smith was celebrated as YSB’s Volunteer of the Year at the CCCHS Rose Cologne Dinner.

Whether she is welcoming the residents of our Stormbreak Girls Group Home by hosting an annual Girls’ Day, making sure that the youth and families who access our Burrowes Street Youth Haven have the resources they need by heading up an annual Winter Clothing Drive, or meeting up regularly with her Little through our Big Brothers Big Sisters program, Keriann is passionate about making sure that all who come into contact with her feel welcome.

Keriann also serves on YSB’s Board of Directors and the BBBS Advisory Council.

Denim day

Denim Day is an annual event that takes place on April 24th. The event originated in 1999 in protest of a high court ruling in Italy that overturned a rape conviction because the survivor was wearing tight jeans. This decision sparked outrage and led to the creation of Denim Day which encourages participants to wear denim as a symbolic statement against victim-blaming and in support of survivors. We at YSB support Denim Day, along with our friends at Centre Safe and sexual assault survivors all over the world.

prevention

This summer, Prevention expects to see a large increase in youth at our Bellefonte and Mountaintop Youth Centers! Our centers exist to provide our county's youth ages 5-18 with a safe place to be themselves, receive a meal, engage with peers, and have fun. Both centers provide a large array of programming such as arts & crafts, imagination club, cooking and baking days, and groups pertaining to violence, gambling, and drug & alcohol prevention. To help with our influx of youth and to be able to provide them with an amazing summer, the youth centers have created an Amazon Wishlist. This list has items that will support our county's youth in having a fun, safe, and educational experience this summer. Please consider purchasing an item off our wish list to help make this happen.
