BBBS Little, Oliver, listening to his Big, Mariele’s remarks as he receives an award at last year’s Annual Gathering

With summer quickly approaching and the weather shifting, I am constantly reminded of our community's ever-changing needs. This prompts me to reflect on the resilience and awareness that the staff at YSB demonstrate throughout the year. With each new season, the YSB team addresses these often-overlooked shifts in need to provide better support for the youth and families we serve.

Although a few months away, one of the great ways we show our community just how special they are to us is through our Annual Gathering. It is a time of celebration and recognition, not only for our organization but for the youth and families we support.

Join us on August 13th to celebrate the resilience of our staff and the fantastic community we serve.

CEO Spotlight

In May, Soroptimist International of Centre County presented our very own CEO, Christine Bishop, with a service award recognizing her continued efforts to help those in need in our community. They also donated $500 to YSB to help us in our mission.

Christine attended their annual awards dinner and participated in a Q&A session where she answered questions about the scope of YSB’s services, our needs, and our impact.

Soroptimist has been a long-time supporter of our Stormbreak Girls Group Home and last summer helped our BBBS site-based and waitlisted Littles take a summer trip to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park.

STATE COLLEGE PRIDE

Rainbow Colored Dots
Rainbow Colored Dots

PRIDE is celebrated annually in June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Riots and works to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning individuals.

YSB is proud to again be one of the sponsors of State College Pride! On Saturday, June 8th, YSB will have a group walking in the Pride Parade at 10am. The festival begins at 12pm, and we will have a table to share about all of the amazing programs YSB offers to our community.

Come out to South Allen Street on the 8th for a fun day of celebrating love in any form with YSB staff and youth from our various programs!

This past school year, our site-based program grew exponentially! We have programs at two State College School District elementary schools where students are paired with adult volunteers. These matches meet after school each week. We also have a site-based program in Bellefonte that pairs Bellefonte high school students who are the mentors with elementary students at two schools. These matches meet during the school day. Our site-based coordinator, Zack Maser, is present at all sites.

Our site-based matches do not meet over the summer, so we “Bridge the Summer Gap” with these Littles by planning a variety of activities to keep them connected and supported. If you would like to donate to our Summer Activities fund, please contact Program Director, Rebecca Lord at rlord@ccysb.com or (814) 237-5731.

residential services

Residential services at YSB include three main programs - our Stormbreak Girls Group Home, our Burrowes Street Youth Haven teen shelter, and our Supportive Independent Living program. These programs work collaboratively to serve young people ages 12 through 21 who need a safe place to stay and caring YSB youth advocates who can help them learn the skills they need to achieve independence. Whether they stay with us for one night or all year long, we help the young people who access our services find the support they need to succeed.

We are so proud to announce that we have four young people, who have called YSB home this past year, celebrating their high school graduation this week! Thank you to everyone on our team - including the young people themselves - for putting in the hard work, dedication, and energy needed to reach this important milestone. We know they’ll go on to do great things!

All of our Residential programs can benefit from household staples like cleaning supplies, paper products, hygiene products, and more.
